Jigging for Late Summer Pike
by Dan Gagnon of www.threeguysfishing.com
If you’re like me, you have a tackle box full of pike spoons and bait rigs, walleye jigs, plastics and crankbaits for bass. But mixing it up can really bring some payback for pike, especially when fishing gets slower in mid to late summer.
Next time you find yourself on a warm August day with slow fishing like half pound bass and the occasional ravenous skinny pike, break out the walleye jigs and get the net ready.
First, throw out the silver leader, it’ll scare away the bigger, sluggish summer pike. Instead, tie up about 2 feet of 20 or 30 pound test line onto whatever you’re using on your baitcaster or spinning rod and reel combo. Tie on a heavy yellow or white jig head and hook a live or dead 3 or 4 inch minnow / smelt through the head and jig in about 10 to 15 feet of water outside the usual weed beds, breaks and points.
The beauty of this technique is its simplicity and versatility. It’ll catch almost anything and you can skip using and risking the more expensive and fancy lures in your tackle box and stuck with the cheap and easy jigs and still fill your stringer.
