Elliot Lake Camping and Cooking! By Mark Hutchinson
Having just returned from Elliot Lake for a fantastic camping weekend with Dan and my good friend Danielle, I just wanted to do a short write up on camping in general and the different foods that you can cook while camping. There are quite a few simple things you can bring along on your next trip to have some different things that are super easy to make and quite delicious as well!
We headed out on Thursday evening and packed up the boat for a ride across Quirke Lake which is just outside of Elliot Lake, Ontario. This lake is a phenomenal fishery for lake trout as well as small mouth bass. We loaded up our tent, chairs, camp stove, and various other bits of gear for 4 days of outdoors!
We spotted a great location just on the shore of the lake which looked like a good spot to setup for the weekend of camping. The nice part about camping in Elliot Lake is that most of the land is crown land which means you can setup camp for a couple of days with no worry. Just don’t build a house and stay there!
We were hitting the bass hard on the first couple of days with pretty well non-stop action! We kept our limit of nice eating size fish and let the big ones go back to spawn again and make sure that there are always fish to be had!
The main recipe that I like to use while camping is very simple and can also be found in our recipe book. Simply fillet your fish and then dip them in egg and then in a flour, salt, and pepper mix. Then fry them up in a skillet full of oil until they are crispy brown. You can serve this with a side of fire charred potato which is accomplished by actually putting bare potatoes directly in the hot coals of the fire for about 30 minutes and burn the outside totally black. The insides are absolutely delicious though!
Another nice treat is to soak corn in water (still in the husk) and then put them on the bonfire until the husk turns black. The corn will have steamed itself on the inside and will be delicious!
Here is a typical Elliot Lake smallmouth bass! Danielle is pretty happy!
Just another amazing sunset on Quirke Lake in Elliot Lake!
We found that a combination of tube jigs and jig heads with live minnow seemed to be doing the trick. Looking for rocky shoals with a drop from 6 feet to 20 feet was key as well. They seemed to really turn on around 9 in the morning and again around 8 at night.
